| Florence is the capital of Tuscany. It is an ideal walking city, with many of the main attractions situated close to one another. Visitors to Florence will be delighted by the cultural and historical impact of the city from the stunning marble façade of the Piazza del Duomo to the Uffizi Gallery. Situated on the banks of the River Arno, the gallery houses a world-famous collection of Florentine art, including Botticelli's Birth of Venus, Titian's Venus of Urbino and Michelangelo's Holy Family. Guarding the Palazzo Vecchio is a copy of Michelangelo's David, probably the most stroked sculpture in the world. A stroll along the banks of the Arno brings you to the Ponte Vecchio. The famous 14th-century bridge is lined with shops selling gold and silver jewellery, but was once lined with butchers shops. One of the most visited sites in Florence is the Pitti Palace. A huge and imposing building, it houses works of art by Raphael, Tintoretto, Veronese and Rubens, all hung in lavishly decorated rooms. |
