The Gran Teatre del Liceu, a famous 19th century opera house can also be found in this area. La Rambla ends with Monument a Colom, dedicated to Christopher Columbus, and the city harbour. The Barri Gotic contains ancient buildings dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. It is a maze of narrow streets connecting several squares where scores of cafes and restaurants invite you to stop for a drink or some food. The Museu Picasso is a magnificent collection of the great mans most famous works and comprises of three strikingly beautiful stone mansions. If you only visit one attraction in Barcelona, it has to be La Sagrada Familia, the lifes work of Barcelonas favourite son, Antoni Gaudi. The magnificent spires of this unfinished cathedral reach majestically towards the sky and are encrusted by impressive sculptures that seem to almost bring the stonework to life. Despite Gaudis death in 1926, building work continues to this day. |
